Compressor is leaking. Has been updated to newer freon.think mechanic is pulling a swift one

An air conditioner compressor that has locked can keep the engine from cranking (turning over) so therefore the engine can't start .. In these cases - removing the compressor drive belt will allow engine to crank ok - start up and run... IF there is an engine 'cranking' problem, have the mechanic remove the belt then try to start the engine.
If the compressor locks up and the serpentine belt isn't turning the water pump it could cause engine damage by causing the motor to overheat. A leaking compressor however is not necessarily a sign it is going to seize.
