I agree - there is a problem and operating an engine at that temperature will certainly cause more serious troubles.

280 degrees is awfully hot for a thermostat to wait to open. Can you confirm that this is the case though? Do you have a diagnostic tool reading coolant temperature sensor? Can you verify coolant flow?
