What would cause needed replacement of coolant reservoir system for 2014 Encore.

I am having coolant system replaced on 2014 Buick and there was no indication there was leak other than visual inspection by mechanic. I don't understand why this happened and why the monitor inside the car didn't indicate that this problem existed.
