Put car in park and it went into low gear, said traction control was on. Turned car off for a few minutes turned back on. Everything went back to normal but now engine light is on.

Testing will be required to find out what data has been left behind in the processor regarding the concern that has illuminated the check engine light. This will help figure out what has gone wrong.

You shifted into PARK but the transmission went into LOW GEAR instead - that is indeed a conundrum! Hopefully the check engine light indicates a clue may be present. Good luck with this!
