Suspect starter motor. To test.. when it acts up.. Tap starter with hammer while helper holds key to the start position.. If starter then cranks engine, replace starter!!

thanks for the advice. This car has been in 3 shops (including the dealer) and none of them can pinpoint the cause. I'd like to think they checked the starter - but you never know. I'll try your advice .
