Fuel pump relay location.

I have a 1988 Buick century 3.8 that randomly stalls on me. when it does there is usually a strong smell of gas. Check engine light comes on yet there are no codes as car will start right back up. And light will be off. everything checks out okay, new fuel pump and filter, replaced timing chain as I knew it was worn out. Replaced ecm also. coils test good. Fuel pressure regulator ok. Fuel pressure at 30-32 psi at key on and 32-34 when running.also replaced cam and crank sensors

How is it being checked for codes??

Ok, one more time... HOW has it been checked to see if any codes are present???

I plug it in as you would for OBD II and I can not find any other data links to jump with a paper clip or wire as you need to do on some vehicles. This random stalling has come to that two days ago, it would not start at all, it would try yet wouldn't stay running. This tells me fuel pump again, then yesterday, I go out, starts right up again. today, hooked up to test fuel pressure, none there again,after fourth turn of key, i had pressure and car started. This is why I am looking for fuel pump relay.

I didn't think you had an OBD 1 code reader or scanner!!!... I'll give you the part # for the relay so you can google it for a picture.. That's the thing - there are no relays where their supposed to be. The pigtail for the evap canister is supposed to go to the location you mentioned yet it goes back to the fire wall instead. From what I described about the stalling and start but no run, could the new fuel pump be the problem?

It could be a lot of things, need to get the trouble codes!.. When it stalls .. Try unplugging mass air flow sensor to see if it will run then.. Good luck, gotta go! .. (1988 Century didn't have a 3.3 option, you must have the 2.8 or 3.8)

The MAF sensor was a real problem on those engines.. Another good test is to tap on sensor while engine is idling.. IF you notice 'ANY' response from engine... Replace MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR!! > *Part Number: XTP47877* .. Product Line: NAPA Reman. Computers

That was one of the first things I checked. No change and I even swapped out with another good one and the other car ran fine with my mass on it, yet the Buick had same problem even with a different mass on it. I also unplugged it and the engine revved higher for a bit, yet also had erratic idle speed. Plugged it back in and idle went to almost smooth.

Since it starts right back up, no hands-on testing can be done. Intermittent engine stall problem can be a b---h to find!.. Leave fuel pressure gauge and scan tool hooked up while a helper is driving and hope you can catch it acting up.. Good luck.
