smokes at startup then stops.
What makes this problem better or worse?
if it sits more than 10 minutes, start the car there is a cloud of smoke for maybe 5 to 10 seconds

Hello, smoking at start ups can be caused by a few things -- it can be normal condensation during a cold start that dissipates after the engine gets to operating temperature, black smoke can be excessive unburnt fuel in the exhaust, blue smoke can be oil burning, and white smoke can be coolant in the engine oil. Since there are several possibilities here, and not all are "problems", it's best if a trained eye looks at your smoke with you and sees what you are experieicng.
