99 540i Cranks, but no start. Started it 1 month ago, fine.battery died

I did remove fuel fuse number 17, and put back...so that it fires smoothe..when it stays long it rough starts...but I noticed 31 fuse is missing...should I put a spare fuse there? The car is in my garage, im trying to start myself to avoid towing charges...any suggestions I can do myself?

i dont know.what is fuse 31 for?maybe its left blank,not used!what does the owners manual say its for,or fuse box lid?never replace a fuse with a higher amp rating or if not used,dont put one there.

17 and 31 are both for fuel pump...but I took at 17 and put it back. but I need a tip to try something for myself...any ideas? car cranks when it is jump started but does not start. car started fine a month a go in the garage. I left it a little too long between starts and battery died. battery is a year old...if it cranks when jumped is it possible it could be battery? trying to start myself to save on towing

yes if it does not crank on its own,then you jump from another car,and it cranks,you need to check battery with a meter.also if you say fuse 17&31 works the fuel pump,why is fuse 31 missing now?you need to re-check your manual,if it says fuse 17 and 31 works the fuel pump,its not going to start if missing.also you said when jumped,you get a crank,no start condition.you need a volt meter to check voltage on battery,if below 12.6 vdc,take it and have it charged at AZ,ADV,ORLY,its free.then you need to find out about the fuses,missing,getting power to them.check all the fuses.did someone remove fuse 31?

no 31 was always empty....but if car cranks when jumped but wont start....what else can I try? it started no problem 1 month ago....Is it possible that if it cranks fine, that it could still be battery? cause it sound like cranking fine when jumped but no start

if you jumped it and it cranked over but did not start,make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.then take your battery and have it checked,charged.also, it did not start.i know you said running 1 month ago,but something has happened.you have lost something somewhere. 3 things,spark,fuel/air,compression.if missing any one of these,it is not going to start.you can not guess at it,must be checked.spark test.fuel pressure test.no magic button,sorry.

ok thanks, I went out and bought a quality automatic battery charger....cross my fingers that it starts afterward...
