transmission was replaced now the shift paddles do not work what did they do wrong

This is a certified mechanic who works on foreign cars all the time. The trans was matched right had 55,678 miles going in to the car. He had the tech guy come to set the computer up to program the new trans. Steering wheel shift paddles do not work. What is the problem.
