2006 BMW 525i Wipers not working when switched on. Parked in upright position.

Wipers won’t sweep when switched on in any mode. When switched on I can hear (the motor?) humming I f I give the wiper stalk a nudge they will sweep one time and park in the upright position

What makes this problem better or worse?

The shop pulled the air filter the previous day

Common occurrence in winter weather - snow / ice on windshield holds wipers in place - turn wipers on and the wiper transmission linkage splines are easily damaged. *Hands-on* evaluation is required.
