My car only starts sometimes, I turn the key, it doesn't click, all lights turn off and nothing. but then if I do it like 30 more times it starts right up. or it will start the first time. and then when I have to take it back home It happens and I'm stranded. would it be the starter?

The ignition switch could be failing and if your ignition key has a chip located on it you might call the GM parts dept that carries olds parts in your area abd ask them about cutting a new key or trouble shooting the no start problem
Car would not start. I googled care problems with the 88 Olds and it said anti-theft system that uses raised chip key. It had caused me a lot of frustrated times when I needed to be somewhere desperately. These "no-start" times occurred for a number of times and having another car, I would drive another vehicle. But having share these experiences with a locksmith, he said that the security anti-theft was the culprit. He mentioned that when trying to start, an onboard module with a resistor, at the base of steering column, detects a certain resistance and if the resistance is not detected within a tolerance range designed for that car, "It thinks it is being "hot-wired" and not start. The Locksmith also said that there was 9 different resistor ranges for my type of car. My particular car based on vin # has a 3000 ohms resistor anti-theft system. I mulled first about bypassing the module system as suggested by Locksmith. He had the by-pass part available. I started thinking about replacing the ignition switch based on another mechanic diagnostic or guess. The Locksmith told me that it had a 5 minute wait for the system to reboot and then it would bypass itself and start. But one must not interrupt the 5 minute wait and try to start the car. Heck my wait extended sometimes up to 30 minutes, due to the key deteriorating, I guess. I googled and found that it could be the key itself. Locksmith said that 25% chance it would be the key and 75% chance it would be the ignition switch along with wiring harness leading down to module resistor down towards base of steering column. I decided to trying the cheapest approach and had another key cut with raised chip and........... so far so GOOD ! IT WORKED !
It turned out to only be the Key!!!!! :) THANKS SO MUCH!
