What is your question?
Have you heard of any issues with infiniti Q50 oil pans being a defective design due to having a plastic plug with a brass or metal fitting that it screws into ?? Hence, getting stuck and the only way to fix is to replace oil pan. My mechanic of 18 yrs is claiming they didn't strip it, its a defective design. Infiniti claims mechanic over tightened it and stripped it and won't cover it under warranty. Thank you.

It's not defective. It's workmanship. Period, end of story, no debate required. Your mechanic, "trusted" as they are, are at fault. It happens. Seems like 18 years of loyalty should amount to something, shouldn't it? I can say one thing: If you're at the Infiniti dealership, and they're the only ones who have ever changed your oil, this gets handled without any expense on your part, also period end of story. Something to think about. I believe in people building relationships and having choices in a technician / repair shop to be loyal to and count on. I also believe, however, that the loyalty works both ways. A repair shop trying to transfer blame onto "defect" when it's clearly not sounds like a lack of loyalty to you, the client. I'm sorry you're in this position, and wish you the best of luck.
Oil drain plug “stuck” in oil pan ? Can’t be removed by drilling then repair threads - simply install new drain plug? IF that isn’t possible - surely the next size drain plug will work after tapping new threads of correct size - since this is an aluminum oil pan and ‘thick’ enough for this repair.. I’ve successfully fixed a bunch of em on various makes / models. Furthermore i really don’t understand how this could possibly void the vehicle manufacturers warranty.. Hell, it ain’t rocket science! A true conundrum...
Wonder if you broke a wheel lug stud changing a flat tire it would void the warranty ? Some-thing is amiss here.
Infiniti won't warranty a new oil pan if it's put in by someone else. My long time mechanic did the last oil change, so it isn't covered under warranty. In order to get s new oil pan at no charge, I have to go to my mechanic.
Thank you so much for your quick response. My mechanic has reluctantly offered to replace the oil pan at no charge, however, has made it clear they aren't admitting they did anything wrong and that due to the alleged defective design its going to happen again and they aren't going to replace it again. Infiniti has told me it's my mechanics fault, but if I let my mechanic replace the oil pan it will void my warranty, and i need to confirm, but they might have suggested they won't do my oil changes. Infiniti wants me to pay them $800 to replace it. I'm just frustrated. This is my 3rd Infiniti, and I had 2 Maxima's before that, all with zero problems, ever.
Your mechanic is doing the right thing. As long as original equipment parts are used, they come with a warranty -- and an oil pan is a "fixed" part that doesn't have any moving components or functional duty other than to contain oil and allow draining. Therefore, your dealership is being miserable by insinuating scare tactics so that you spend money with them. Not reasonable. The only way your warranty does not continue is that if materials and workmanship affect the functional operation of Infiniti components. In which case -- like a collision which creates damage, the fault is not Infiniti's. You're in a good position here; have the shop replace the pan and then continue to patronize them to your comfort level -- seems like they won't allow this concern to occur again, or if they are uncomfortable servicing your vehicle further, the see another facility or dealership who is willing to build a relationship with you. There's a lot of posturing going on here, and if anyone actually cared about you as a client, they'd handle business. Your mechanic is trying to do that, but I don't know why they are transferring blame to Infiniti. That's where their credibility goes out the window.
