What is your question?
I just replaced the thermostat, thinking the leak was there but its not. Not sure where the water pump is located but the leak seems to be coming for a high position. It looks like the drips are concentrated just under the tension pulley, or slightly to the left of it, kind of hard to see. I only noticed the problem because my fans kept turning on. Then one day the temp guage rose about 3 quarters of the way, then dropped back down to mid way point. Fans blow cold air when they are on, but thats as long as there is coolant present. I hope its just the water pump.

Pressure test the cooling system and watch for the leak.
Did the pressure test, it in fact turned out to be the water pump. I purchased a new pump, and figured I would replace it on my own, it all seemed prettu simple until I got to the tensioner. Theres a bolt, and a hole that fits a ratchet. Which one do I turn to loosen the belt? Secondly, theres a hose that connects to the bottom of the pump, whats holding the hose on? Al I see is what looks like a clamp, nothing that seems to bolt on like the top hose that holds the thermostat. This is where I stopped. Didnt want to get all the way to tht hose and get held up. Figured I would ask first before disassembling everything. Thanks for any help.
Use the bolt head on the pulley and those are spring clamps you squeeze to release.
Thanks professor G. Is there anything else i should be aware of or at least look out for? I heard I had to drain the coolant from some plug at the lower left hand side of the rad? If its leaking pretty fast is there even anything left to drain? Also a mechanic said im in no immediate danger because its not over heating so its ok to drive, just make sure that i have water and coolant on standby, is that true? I cant get to the pump right now and this is my only means of transpo.
Make sure you keep it full enough for it not to overheat. Don't get lazy and think it won't get any worse don't trust it to be ok. Check it often and don't push your luck.
I definitely dont plan on letting it stay like this for long. I just dont have time to it right now, or the sun light. How long do u think it will take? The belt shouldnt give me any problems should it? Thats the only thing tthat worries me.
I know this probably sounds like a stupid question Professor G, but theres a reason why I ask. Is it possible for a bad thermostat to cause the water pump to leak? Since my last visit to the repair shop the leak has completely stopped, not one drop, and they didnt do anything but a pressure test. I went to AutoZone, bought the pump, which was stolen out of my car that same night by the way, the next day i drive, check for leaks so i could add water if needed and nothing. Checked the fluid and it still sitting in the same position. Im lost! Remember i changed the thermostat already.
There is a lot of debris in older cooling systems that float around and possibly collected at the leaking area just as some stop leak has been used. It's not necessarily a permanent fix. Keep an eye on it in case it leaks again.
Well i guess my question at this point is not only where did they patch it and who because it definitely wasnt me.
Ok i see what u meant, totally misunderstood what u were trying to say. I was about to use that bars leak stuff but realized that wasn't such a good idea. But the car hasn't leaked 1 drop, complete mystery. Do u think its possible that the old thermostat was stuck in the on position causing the coolant to continuously flow? I just trying to make sense of it all and determine if i really need a new pump or not. Or shpuld i just play it safe and get another pump anyway?
Water flows anyway. Just plan on changing it sooner or later. As long as it's working is fine but don't forget about it.
Do you know why when im sitting idle in drive the car sits about 500 rpm, then it jumps to about 600. Thats when this whole water pump thing started. Is that a sign of a bad head gasket?
The a/c could be cycling or something else. If head gasket it would be worse.
Funny you mention the a/c. I accidentally cut the wires to the a/c harness while installing my stereo, so the a/c doesnt even work. A new harness is next on my to do list. But as far as the sporatic rpms, when it jumps to the 600 range, its as if the acceleration is pressed then released, but the rpm stays at 600. I had a Hyundai once, and it did the same thing except the rpms never went down, just constantly rose and never went down, it ended up being the head gasket which is why i thought this was the problem.
