How do you know whether the fuel pump is the problem or just the fuel relay?

Recently bought used 2012 Chevy Malibu which barely has 70k miles on it. Drove it from Kentucky to Maryland fine and then it just would not cut back on. You could tell the gas would not kick in so the scanner code my friend used said it was the fuel pump. My battery drains super fast when I try to turn the car on and the it make a "click" noise then the entire car would shut off needing a jump to cut back on. Not too car savvy so I'm not sure if this is a simple fix or a serious problem?
