If the ignition control module fails, or is failing, the engine may run rough, stall, fail to start, hesitate, or buck during normal driving. The check engine light will illuminate on the instrument panel, and will often be flashing; this indicates the engine should be stopped immediately.

Common misdiagnoses

Spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coils, and distributor cap and rotor sets are the most commonly replaced components to correct a misfire, even before testing the ignition control module. A functional fuel pump and fuel filter are commonly replaced in an attempt to solve ignition control module failure due to lack of testing.
