My car got locked up and I took it to the shop. They tell me that the a/c compressor was spinning and broke and locked up the car. Can they just take it off and use a shorter serpentine belt?

The pulley for the belt is not the compressor locking up, it turns on it's own while the compressor is off, so what really happened? Another pulley can be installed if the hub to mount it on is still there. If it broke off, the engine would then turn. If you put a shorter belt on it might need a pulley kit.
