The car turns on but we just can't get the key out of the ignition it stays on acc

The problem is more than likely within the *gear shifter* mechanism .. Shifter has got to be fully engaged into park position before key will turn to off .. Interlock may be sticking inside the shifter cavity - coffee, soda etc., being spilled into shifter cavity will become a viscous syrup - especially in colder temperatures .. I have had some success spraying WD-40 inside the shifter cavity - then moving the shifter back & forth several times. Compressed air from a shop air compressor can be very helpful with a sticking shifter interlock. https://repairpal.com/repair-shops
There is also an electrically actuated solenoid in the steering column that can cause the same issue .. However that is less likely to be the actual problem . Good luck with it!
