What is your question?
My air conditioning quit working and a grinding noise under the hood so I went to the local mechanic. The ac compressor is done for. I Do not care to have ac. He said I do not have to fix it, the pulley is a free spinning pulley and the serpentine belt will be safe as long as I don't engage it. He says long trips are safe. I want to be totally sure he was correct before I start driving again.
What makes this problem better or worse?
It’s always the same
How long has your 2007 Chevrolet Impala had this problem?

I could not guarantee it doesn't come apart. Yes it's not engaged with the ac off but who knows what kind of damage has been done in there if it's making a loud noise. If you don't want ac then I'd find a shorter belt or a way to eliminate the belt running on the compressor. Alex
Be aware that the compressor can be engaged by default when defrost / defogger mode is selected .. IF no other repairs are to be attempted - at least disconnect the wire connector at the a/c compressor to insure it can not engage.
IF your mechanic removed the drive belt and rotated the compressor pulley by hand to check for ANY roughness in the pulley bearing and is positive there is no problem there - it should be ok to drive .. However IF that has not been done - seek *hands-on* inspection that includes this test. Good luck!
