*Hands-on* inspection of brake components will be required to discover source of knocking noise. Suspect brake pad or brake caliper mounting hardware is missing or excessively worn.

Applying brakes temporarily tightens brake components due to the clamping force of calipers - noise subsides until brakes are released. In any event recommend test drive + visual inspection by qualified personnel.
