Would big knobby tires cause problems for 4cyl 2wd prerunner?

Just bought my son a 99 tacoma prerunner, looks like a 4x4 but it's not. Has large knobby tires that looks great on it, BUT... would the vibration from these, cause extra strain on the 4 cyl motor, or other? Rides rough, obviously, dash shakes, etc. but looks tough. What should we do to take care of the motor and other parts? Give up the look or let it ride tough? Thanks for your help!!
