won't start just grinds

Are you saying that the starter grinds like it's not engaging and won't turn the engine? If so, then the starter drive gear is not engaging the engine flywheel, and you probably will need to get a replacement starter. If you're lucky it hasn't done much damage to the ring gear on the flywheel. Or are you telling me that the starter turns the engine OK but it won't start? If it's just that the engine won't run, from what you wrote, I'm thinking maybe you have a failed timing chain.
