Why would this car use so much gas, what mechanically

Problem occurs all the time just uses too much gas!

There are many reasons a vehicle can use too much fuel. Some are mechanical and engine management issues, some are physical attributes.

I would recommend a diagnostic assessment be carried on on the drivability side - including the engine performance.

At the same time - check for any attributes that may be slowing down your vehicle, requiring more fuel to operate your car, etc. Things like bug deflectors, exterior trim.
