Why the check engine light stays on, and it says gas cap

If replacing the gas cap fixed it before it may be related to that. So long as you're not having other issues just keep tightening the gas cap. There may be an issue with the fuel filler itself that's not allowing the cap to seat properly, which will cause the same sort of emissions leak that sets off that light.
