Why smoke and heat appear on both sides after rear brakes replaced when driven?

No noise when driving car. Took car to test drive right after both rear brakes were replaced. You can smell a very bad smell along with excessive heat and smoke coming from new brake pad area on R and L sides.
What makes this problem better or worse?
When I brake it's worst.
