driving down road side view mirror exploded for no reason. mirror shattered and back of mirror blew off. i never did find back of mirror, it sounded like a gun shot

Rear tire must have launched a projectile than was picked up from the roadway while driving .. It must have left the tire at just the precise point of rotation to be thrown forward to hit the mirror - or it ricocheted forward off the rear wheel well. I can’t think of any other logical explanation. I had a very small stone hit my windshield once and it sounded like the report of a 22 rifle shot inside the vehicle!
Yes it did put a tiny little place on the windshield that was ‘barely’ noticeable - that later grew into a 3 foot long crack! Now the ‘mirrors’ are not made of safety glass like a windshield is and would literally explode if struck by such a projectile... That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
