where is the starter

Look where the engine connects to the transmission, the starter motor will be somewhere, near the ring gear or flywheel area. On some Subaru's it is on the top area of the motor and not underneath. The large red battery cable will be connected directly to it. ( actually the solenoid, which is part of the starter assembly )

The starter is on top of the motor on the driver's side.
