what would make my daughters 95 ford contour crank but not turn over?

It cranks , won't turn over and then it sat for a day we went to turn it over so we could listen to what it was doing and it started right up. She drove it all day , parked it. Got in it next morning it cranked wouldn't start, did this like 4 times finally started. pulled out and got about 100 feet , died and wont start again..
