What is your question?
Have 68,000 on the car, has been getting 21 city and 29 hwy since it was new, this problem started about two weeks ago, no loss of performance noted, my local mechanic thinks spark plugs. What else should we check that would cause this problem?
What makes this problem better or worse?
Nothing that I know of
How long has your 2001 Toyota Avalon had this problem?
2-3 weeks

Spark plugs won't really lose you 3 miles per gallon. It's not a bad idea to replace them at this point anyway as a proactive measure. Ensure your driving conditions have not changed. Cars are pretty static in performance, but obviously economy varies depending on environment and driving needs. Temperature outside can figure in, also the blend of fuel used (there are 6 blends of fuel year round, the current blend could be more volatile than the weather allows for, causing less economy). If there was something actionable, then you would normally have a check engine light illuminate and your technician would find some kind of correlating problem.
Had same issue after I replaced tires. Not sure if related but one of the front brake callipers was seized and brake was "stuck" on that wheel to a good extent. Can also check to see if large amount of brake dust on any of the alloy wheels. Also after much driving smelled a burnt smell. Simple fix was mechanic lubed the callipers - got back to my normal good gas efficiency on new TOYO Versado Noir tires which btw are great and even feel like new shock absorbers were installed (which were not). Love my 2001 Avalon.
