Q: What would a reasonable charge be for a window regulator replacement be? Labor? on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt SS

I ordered a window regulator and took it to my local mechanic to have it replaced.. he calls me about 2 hours later and states that the part is incorrect and he put the door back together. He stated he would just charge me $96 for the door panel removal and putting it back.... this doesnt seem right to me... he didnt do anything... at best a diagnostic check fee would be reasonable... but he insist it would cost 1 hour of labor so $96 is fair.. I looked up and it states the whole job would take 0.8 hours so even if he is correct in charging me for an hour of labor.. its $96/hr labor?

labor per hour sounds right. it is expensive to run an automotive business. you provided the wrong part and he took off the panel and had to do that to find out it was wrong. charging you labor for that is correct as you provided the wrong part. you will have to pay it again when you have it replaced.
you would have been better off letting him get the part for you. then it is on him, not you.

even though I ordered the part number that He told me to order? and since when does it take anyone 1 hr to remove a door panel... according to the time it takes on the labor side... his own system... the whole replacement takes 0.8hr worth of labor.. and he did nothing... so he charges me a $46 for a diagnostic... when i told him already it needed to be replaced... then an additional $96 to tell me the part that was in a box and he had in his hand was wrong? so he couldnt see that the part that His guys had me order was wrong.
not until he removed the panel. he had to re install it too. i know you are frustrated and i dont blame you but even in my shop, if you want to provide your own parts, you pay if it is wrong.
talk to him about it rationally without sarcasism and see if he will help you out. he should if he want s to keep you for a customer. a good business man always wants to keep his people.

i guess he doesnt need my business... he wants to charge me full price on the next go around as well... so a total of $250 give or take.. so its fine he has lost me and my 4 cars since apparently the difference of $50 is more important...
