PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TYPE OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MY 97 Grand Cherokee with a inline 6 cyl. have? My repair manual shows 5 auto trans for this year model. I looked at the model # on the trans and it does not match any of the models in my manual "42RE / 42RH / 44RE / 46RH / 46RE" The # on the trans was really hard to read but it looked like "PY21195 or PY521195". It is not possible to determine the exact transmission you have in your vehicle without the VIN number and the vehicles Build Code Plate information. A metal Body Code Body Code Plate plate is attached (riveted) to the top, left side of the radiator reinforcement. There can be a maximum of seven rows of information on the plate. The information should be read from left to right. Start with line 1 at the bottom of the plate up to line 7 at the top of the code plate. Line #1 Digit 1-3=Transmission Sales Code. Your dealership can also tell by the VIN number.
