What problems can result from ac clutch malfunctioning?

My check engine light came on after I felt a slight "tug" in my car. I'm assuming it was some sort of "power surge" when, what I believe to be, the malfunction occurred. Also, I'd forgotten to open my vents up and my heater was running on the first speed setting on, I believe, the highest heat setting. p.s. I'm not sure if my engine is the correct engine listed.
