What does the check engine light mean?

I started my car and the check engine light came on. I had just driven it with no problems less than 40 mins before. when I turned the car off it sounded like it was still running like a fan or something was still on what could be the cause?

I don't know what to say about the fan except that if there's a fault in the engine control system the fan could be commanded on for that reason. You didn't say whether the fan kept running or not. The check engine light indicates that the computer has detected a malfunction in the engine/transmission control system and has diagnostic codes and data stored which would be essential in diagnosing the problem. A technician with a scanner can access the diagnostic codes and data and then be able to give you a diagnosis. Thank you for you're reply. the next day it was stopping on me at traffic lights and the oil light would come on I received a tow to the shop. after being connected to the computer it was determine the temperature sensor was going off but ultimately the issue was a leak in my coolant container so i had to get it replaced
