What could cause Sputtering and flashing check engine light?

I took off from a stop taking a left up a steep hill so I kind of have to gun it a little to get up the hill. While my engine was reved a little high about half way up the hill my car sputtered and the check engine light came on and started flashing. When I'm parked idling it feels normal, but if I switch to reverse or drive it begins to be a rough idle. Then when I drive it runs rough/sputtery with light acceleration...
