What could cause my gas pedal having play in it

What is your question?

My car had trouble not starting at all, I replaced the valve cover gasket, battery and alternator. After those issues where fixed it finally cranked up but not too long after my gas pedal does phase my car at all when it's cranked up and running, if I press down on the gas pedal it goes down and the car just idles, it doesn't affect anything and seems as if I'm not pressing the gas pedal at all. I had it checked out and was told I had a bad or cracked engine or a blown head gasket. I plugged in a code reader and got a code about the mass air flow sensor being the problem and not sure if that could have something to do with the gas pedal problem

How long has your 2006 Toyota Solara had this problem?

Your throttle should respond if you depress the accelerator pedal. If it does not, you could have an electronic throttle control issue. There are sensors that report throttle position instead of a cable. The mass air flow sensor code does not indicate there is a problem with the sensor, but rather with the related circuit or reading. It may or may not be related to the throttle concern. What is the code? The throttle will take information regarding air flow and barometric pressure to determine proper fuel and air mixture required. Certainly there could be further concerns, but without knowing more, this is where I'd be looking first.
