what could be the problem, when seeing flickering oil light sign from the dashboard?

I have just bought Audi a3 recently. I noticed the flickering of the oil light and thought it could be oil shortage, I top up the oil thinking the oil light will go away but still having the oil light on, after the oil top up. I don't know if it could be the oil leak somewhere or what. I'm afraid to drive it as this may cause engine knock or mess up the whole engine. please advice.
