What causes the serpentine belt to break if not old?

Driving to work & serpentine belt broke. My husband thinks the water pump may not be working. Is there anything else that may have caused a fairly new belt to break?

Several things can cause a belt that is not old to fail. If any components like power steering pump, A/Compressor, alternator, harmonic balancer (not just idler or tensioner) has a pulley that has a loose bearing or bent will cause wobble, has a bearing or internals seizing, has damage to a pulley that is damaging a belt, has a pulley misaligned or a defective belt. If you need your vehicle checked out and repaired please call Andrew of Kris 456-0722 at CarMasters, thanks, Jim

Suspect either your idler pulley or belt tensioner pulley. Take belt off and spin pulleys- maybe bearings on either binding up and throwing belt off track and shredding.
