What causes ESC light to come on? What does it mean?

Was going 80 mph on highway. Very hot day. No warning. ESC OFF warning light came on. Car lost power. Coasted of highway at about 25 mph. Restarted car and ESC light went off. Check engine light stayed on. What is this problem?

What makes this problem better or worse?

Turn off car. Restart turns ESC light off and can drive a full speed again.
