we noticed that the voltage was pegging out but not all the time. it is a 2003 tahoe. he did jump off the lawnmower before this happened

If your alternator is putting out too much voltage, you need to get it fixed ASAP. Too much voltage can blow out any and all of the electronics in the vehicle. The voltage regulator is part of the powertrain controller. The problem could be cuaused by the regulator wire from the controller shorted to ground between the alternator and the controller, or the alternator could be defective, not responding to the controller. Either way, it's best to tow the vehicle to a GM or auto electrical specialist for diagnosis and work from there. Don't drive it. thanks sooo much we are going to have the oil changed and such wednesday and we will get them to check it out...Hopefully it's not going to cost an arm and a leg..
