upper brake light works---two main lights do not

Yes, check your battery connections, a loose or corroded battery connecton can cause both brakelights or both headlights to blow at the same time due to the battery not being able to smooth out voltege spikes from the alternator. Check that first and ask again if that doesn't get it.
