truck dies when you put it in drive or reverse

the check engine light is not one the truck runs great until you try to put it in gear. when it started it would just go dead while driving now when you put it in gear. If its iddles it will run for days and you can rev the engine and it still runs but the minute you try to drive off it dies and all the dash lights come on.
