Transmission fluid leak and missed gears

What is your question?

It had transmission fluid leak for a while then the car started to skips gears. It would drive in first but wouldn't accelerate anymore trying to shift into second until I'd have to force it into 3rd gear where the car would kick intensely.

What makes this problem better or worse?
