Why do the transfer case motor alledgedly fail after about 120 000km? Been told that it is a common problem with X3 and X5. Surely BMW can do better than that!!! It will cost me R13500-00 to have the problem sorted...I have now 152000 on the clock...

sorry, but this is a common failure, along with plastic radiators, plastic thermostats and plastic radiator hose connectors. at your mileage (94,500) BMW will give you nothing, nor will any other manufacturers. this is why you should not have 4x4 unless you intend to use it on a regular basis, then you get a Toyota or Lexus because they do last longer.
2006 BMW did the same thing if you don't use the 4 wheel drive all you have to do is disconnect the 2 wires that are located on the motor that turns the transfer case off and on the lights on the dash will stay on and 4 wheel drive won't work until you get it fixed. Or you can take it to dealership and spend 2 or 3 thousand dollars and replace the transfer case so your 4 wheel drive works
