have just under 100,000 miles and was told I need to replace timing belt and the kit cost $1385

I can tell you that $1385 is a bit high. In Northern California (where everything costs an arm and a leg), my Honda dealership charged $895 for the timing belt package - including the new timing belt, a new water pump and new external drive belt. Timing belt services tend to be very competitively priced in the market...try quite a few places, including dealers...including dealer web sites that have coupons to make it cheaper yet.
the timing belt is due at 105,000 miles, not 100,000 miles. as long as you compare apples with apples, you could shop around to local Japanese specialty shops and get several prices. if your intention is to keep your car long-term, be sure to replace the water pump, stat, coolant, timing belt idler bearings and tensioner.
