does a 2004 toyota matrix xr have a timing belt or chain and when do should i replace this?

It has a timing Chain, no need to replace :). But make sure after you have put like 120,000 miles or so, to check the belt tensioners, cause those might go bad

are you sure that your matrix has a timing belt? according to toyota, all matrix's have timing chains: http://www.toyota.com/help/faqs/service-does_my_vehicle_have_a_timing_belt_or_a_timing_chain.html
Definitely a timing CHAIN, it does have a serpentine belt though and many confuse them.

Yep a chain. Just like the person above me mentioned, be sure to check the belt tensioners. I ended up replacing a belt at 106k. I am sure I could have use it longer, but I was already in for service and the belt was in pretty bad shape (cracking, etc.) so I just got it replaced.
