Check the engine oil level! After that its hard to guess at the cause without being able to experience the problem first hand and do some basic diagnostic tests. Both engine options for your year use hydraulic lifters (no valve clearances to adjust) but the lifters can get gummed up or fail if engine oil is not frequently changed. They also have variable valve timing and a timing chain between the camshafts. Have the noise checked out it could be too many things to be able to guess at.
