What is your question?
I drive a 2003 Honda Civic and noticed a smell like burning plastic. Afterwards, I noticed that I wasn't needing to touch the gas pedal much if it all but didn't think much of it as I was coasting down hills for the most part. Then I got on the interstate and literally didn't touch the gas for the next 3 miles and it continued to accelerate on own. When it brought it to a stop, it revved up to 5000rmps and wouldn't go down. I turned off the car and even after turning it back on, it wanted to rev back up to 5000rmps immediately. I got it towed back home - my husband thought it was something easily fixable with the throttle sticking but that's not what it is. Now when you start the car, it revs back up to 5000 rpms and it won't let you shift to a gear. Is there an issue with the throttle sensor? Or a damaged vacuum hose? Would that really make my car rev up that much immediately upon starting? My husband hasn't had a chance to inspect it thoroughly with deer hunting.
How long has your 2003 Honda Civic had this problem?

Hello, this might sound ridiculous -- but do you have a floor mat on the driver's floor that may be engaging the throttle unintentionally? This is the most likely cause. You can have a throttle concern -- but hands on testing will be needed to see what is happening. No matter what the result, it is not at all a common concern.
