What is your question?
I move the shifter up and down when it just won't start. Then it starts. It doesn't happen every time. When I get in and try to start it and the engine won't turn over until I move the gearshift. I'm afraid I'll get stranded!

There is a sensor on both the transmission and the brake pedal that complete the ignition circuit. Either one of these could be the problem.
Sounds like it may be a flakey shift position indicator switch. The switch tells the ignition when the transmission is in park. Vehicle is designed to not start unless transmission is in park so if the switch is malfunctioning the ignition may not get the signal that it is in park.
Thank you for your answer, I was thinking that myself but I didn't know there was a part for that purpose. Would you know approximately what that part would cost and the labour to fix that at the dealer?
Best to take it to a trusted mechanic and ask them to troubleshoot the problem and mention that the position indicator may be the culprit. The switch itself is not normally an expensive part (maybe $30) but I don't have any experience on Dodge Journeys to know how much labour is required to replace it. I think Dodge refers to the switch as a "Neutral Safety Switch".
Thank you MacScratchy!
