My 2008 ML350 has developed a very tight steering issue, especially when stopped or moving slowly. The driver can feel flat spots when trying to turn the wheel and the wheel is very difficult to turn. After a decent amount of driving time, it seems to ease up, but for shorter commutes the hard steering lasts the entire time.

Power steering fluid has been topped off but wasn't noticeably low when checked. This is a safty concern and it worries me that Mercedes is aware of this, due to the number of customer complaints, and has done nothing about this. Many of these vehicles are driven by females, namely mothers with children, and this problem should be looked into and a permanent repair should come from Mercedes.
I heard a loud noise when I was trying to steer, I took it to a local shop and said all the power steering liquid had leaked out. Took it to the dealer and said the power steering seals needed to be replaced.
There is a fluid leak coming from the top of the rack and pinion just where the lower steering rod connects to it. I call mercedes hot line and was told there's no re-call on this particular car. Had to make an appointment for service to discuss my options. I only had the car 3 weeks, this sucks, Collay
Leaking power steering fluid - not repaired yet. MB dealership will top off the fluid reservoir for no charge, probably due to the $4195.00 cost to replace the rack assembly.
Very disappointed to learn this is a common problem. First appeared at approximately 30,000 miles.
Entire rack and pinion had to be replaced because the seals were leaking. The repair is a six hour repair and parts are $1200 bringing the total cost to $1,900. This is obviously a defect in manufacture because the steering should not fail on a vehicle that has 55,000 miles.
I can't believe it. I just paid off my car and now I have to deal with expensive repairs. This is my 2nd Mercedes. I will never buy another one again.
Power steering problem. Leaking steering rack!! Slow at first..now really noticeable!! I'm not happy. Already did recall on clamp and Mercedes dealership fixed with a screw down clamp. This I was told may not be good as a high pressure clamp..now I have a leaking steering rack!! This has to be recalled!!!! Mercedes is suppose to be more reliable than these problems..why no recall yet on steering rack.
Noticed after a month purchase My power steering was low and the steering wheel made screeching sounds and the car started idleing high. Checked the reservoir and it was empty mechanic replaced the fluid and approximately two weeks later the steering wheel was screeching again
same issue of whining noise on turns at slow speeds and fluid on garage floor noticed as well. Took to trusted mechanic and he confirmed the rack.pinion steering needs to be replaced. H e topped off the fluid and sent me away to think about the $2,000 repair. Parts should be somewhere around $700 (aftermarket/refurb) to $1200 (OEM). Labor should be around 5-7 hours or about $500-$700 dollars. What a mess...
First there was a whining noise when steering. Discovered the power steering fluid was low. Filled fluid to normal levels which stopped the noise, however a slow leak was remained. Apparently the leak was in the shaft and the whole thing had to be replaced at a price tag of $2729.25.
Power steering rack and pinion leaking along with power steering pump fluid reservoir cracked and pump replacement.
Car became very difficult to steer. Mercedes told me the power steering rack and pump need to be changed for $5000. I am going to get another quote. Seems outrageous!
Power Steering rack developed a leak and the entire thing had to be replaced, after replacement parts the vehicle was never the same again, steering was tough and turning radius was much wider.
I started my vehicle one morning and heard a moaning noise. So I took it to a local shop for them to diagnose it and found out my rack and pinion needed to be replaced. All of the power steering fluid had leaked out. I wasn't having any other problems with steering. I decided to get a second opinion since its a costly repair and they said the same thing. I paid big bucks for my vehicle and wouldn't think I would need such a expensive repair with such low mileage.
started with a leak that was not repaired properly and now the dealer is stating that the whole steering rack needs replacing.
