When the engine starts, the engagement gear occasionally squeels loudly. I assume the shaft that it spins on needs a little lubrication. When I got under the engine, the starter is not in any conventional location I've ever seen. Where is the starter, and how do I get to it?

The starter is on top, and is accessible after removing the intake air distributor. There is no lubrication for this. If the starter fails to disengage, then the starter solenoid may be failing, which will require a new starter. This should be repaired ASAP to prevent damage to the flywheel the starter engages. That will be a much more expensive repair.
Mine does this periodicaly and I just read on another forum. That a guy with the same problem sprayed the bendix with liquid wrench and it hasn't occured again in over a year. So I'm going to giive it a shot.
