I had a fuel pump replaced. Now the car runs rough and white / blue smoke emits from the exhaust. what has caused this? It ran fine without any smoke prior to failure of the fuel pump.

White smoke or steam from the exhaust could be a sign of a blown head gasket particularly if the engine runs rough. There is a simple test called a block check used to detect the presence of carbon monoxide in the cooling system which would only be present if the head gasket failed. Fuel pump replacement would be unrelated.
